Mars Planet Traits
Billions of years ago, Mars was much closer to Earth–with lakes, rivers, and possibly oceans–than it is today; scientists are finding evidence that suggests it might still host some form of life.
Hindu astrology regards Mangal (Mars) as the son of Earth and Kartikeya, representing masculine energy within people as well as providing skills such as surgery or engineering.
Physical
Mars contains an iron and nickel core measuring between 930-1,300 miles (1,500-2,100 kilometers), with its outermost core made of silica spheres surrounded by an expansive mantle ranging in thickness between 770-1,170 miles (1,240-2,100 kilometers), consisting of peridotite. Above this layer lies its crust composed of likely basalt.
Mars’ rocky surface is covered in canyons, volcanoes, and dry lake beds – as well as red dust composed of oxidized iron – while strong winds often whip across its surface to produce massive dust storms that cover entire planets before subsiding again.
Similar to Earth, Mars also experiences seasons, although they last longer due to its elliptical orbit around the sun and an axial tilt, which alters how much sunlight reaches different parts of its planet during an average Martian year.
Due to Mars’ polar ice caps and thin atmosphere, its temperature varies significantly across its surface. At its poles it tends to be cold and arid while nearer its equator temperatures become warmer and drier due to proximity to sun and an elliptical orbit that significantly alters weather patterns.
Mars may no longer have an overall magnetic field, but certain regions of its crust – particularly in the southern hemisphere – are highly magnetized, suggesting it once had one that dissipated at some point in its past. The Mars Global Surveyor mission detected evidence for these magnetic anomalies by studying minerals within Martian crust rocks.
Clues suggest that billions of years ago, Mars was more similar to Earth than it is now. It may have had thicker atmosphere and much more water – rivers, lakes, flood channels and possibly oceans. Close-up images of craters have revealed dark streaks which may represent seasonal deposits of water; radar reflections under polar caps suggest there could be underground bodies as well. Mars rover Curiosity has found evidence of carbon dioxide formation from melting ice combined with warm temperatures; Curiosity may even detect carbon dioxide formation as soon as we encountering warm temperatures!
